The All Progressives Congress, APC national Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru has challenged former Vice President of Nigeria, Abubakar Atiku to join the planned protest by Nigerians against ‘bad governance’ and hunger against President Bola Tinubu administration.
This followed recent comments by Atiku that the rights of citizens to protest are ENSHRINED in the Nigerian Constitution and AFFIRMED by our courts. Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as altered) unequivocally guarantees the right to peaceful Assembly and Association.
He also alleged that that supporters of President Tinubu and the ruling have been caught up in the hunger, anger, and hopelessness in the current administration.
Speaking on Wednesday Channels Television ‘Politics Today’, Basiru, admitted that protest is citizens rights, however, the APC leaders also have the right to appeal to Nigerians to stealth their sword ahead of August 1st protest which has been generating tension and variety of responses.
Senator Basiru said, “I expect Atiku Abubakar to lead the protest. Nobody has stopped anyone from protest. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and our party have never stifle anybody from protest”.
According to him, “Democracy is heterogeneity of ideas. As you are canvasing, your protest has no basis. This is our view”.
Professor Pat Utomi,
has challenged President Tinubu and members of the National Assembly as well as Ministers to cut shun flamboyant lifestyle, reduce cost of governance and address the economic crisis.
The Professor of political economy said the numbers I see are not looking good. We are dealing with the lives of millions of people who are hungry and dying.
He said, “it is time to stop this partisan pageantry. We have a Country that is dying that we need to fix.
We are in a moral equivalence of war”.
“Everybody should sit down and work. I have being talking, but nobody is paying attention”, Utomi said.
