Oba of Benin directs diviners to lay curse on promoters of taboo

Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolor, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin has directed Ewaise group (Diviners) to place a curse on those who are undermining and bringing into disrepute the ancient Benin Customs and tradition in Edo State.

This comes after a socialite, Izoduwa Imasuen, and his groom’s men, unwittingly plunged themselves on the horn of dilemma at his traditional marriage Ceremony where they allegedly twirled ‘Eben’ (ceremonial swords) used by Chieftaincy title holders in paying homage to the Oba of Benin, in line with Benin customs and tradition.

In a statement by the Benin Traditional Council signed by Chief Stanley Obamwonyi, the Esere of Benin, condemned Izoduwa’s sacrilegious act, had set Facebook buzzing and ‘X’ formerly known as Twitter chirping, after marriage Ceremony which took place on the 26th August 2023.

The statement advised members of the public, especially those that are planning traditional marriages not to stultify the traditional norms, but strictly adhere to the acceptable customs and tradition and avoid self-imposed curses.

The statement partly reads, “The general public should not that this act by Izoduwa is an abomination, aberration and a distortion of Benin traditional marriage processes and procedures.

“The twirling of Eben in Benin customs and tradition is by chieftaincy title holders while paying homage to the Oba of Benin.

“Twirling of Eben is never a part of marriage Ceremony in the Benin Kingdom.

“The Palace of the Oba of Benin condemns this act by Izoduwa Imasuen and his groom’s men in all ramifications”, Chief Esere said.
