The Borno State government says it has paid the sum of N10,000 to each to persons displaced by the recent flood that ravaged thousands of livelihoods and destroyed public, private property and communities in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Also, the federal government has offered the sum of N3 billion to assist disaster victims in the State where 719 persons had been rescued, with about one million persons are said to the affected and 50 persons confirmed dead.
The State Commissioner from Information, Prof. Usman Tar disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists on Wednesday in recovery efforts in managing the humanitarian crisis.
The Commissioner revealed that about 20,000 had been evacuated from the flood to highland areas after the disaster, amid outbreak of an epidemic in the State.
He however did not provide details of the modalities used to determine the disbursement of the money to the rehabilitated residents or if the financial support would be sustained by the government.
The intervention, according to him, is in addition to water, food, palliatives, consumables and non-consumables that were supplied by the federal government to support thousands of displaced residents when Alao Dam overflow after a heavy downpour that affected private and public property in Borno.
The Commissioner explained that the 20,000 evacuees who are taking shelters in primary and Secondary schools would return to their homes in the 3-4 days when the flood recedes based on weather predictions.
The overflow of the Dam was during the administration of Nigeria former Head of State, Major-General Ibrahim Babangida (Rted).
The flood washed away Corpses at Cemetery, and submerged the Palace of Shehu of Borno, a Commercial Bank and sacked a zoo where some animals from the wild either escaped or got drowned.
Some inmates from Custodial Centres of the Nigerian Correctional Service, escaped and others got drowned, a claim the federal agency denied on Wednesday.
