Groom’s brother shot dead in fight over wedding food, gifts

Rural dwellers from Ayogwiri and Fugar Communities in Etsako Central Local government Area of Edo State were out for a mysterious surprise when a guest, Mr. Godwin Idumane Atsekhagbor was allegedly shot dead at a traditional marriage Ceremony last weekend.

This followed alleged disagreement between members of the groom and bride’s families over cash gifts that were realised at the event at Fugar where the groom’s brother came from Ayogwiri.

Trouble started when the bride’s family protested against the alleged antics of the groom and his family which funded and prepared food and drinks for the marriage.

It was learnt that decision by the family of the groom from Atsekhagbor family of Ayogwiri, bought a cow for the marriage ceremony and engaged caterers to prepare the food instead of giving the cash meant for entertainment to the bride’s family.

After slaughtering the cow and used the meat to cook the food and Drinks were brought to the bride’s family house on the day of the marriage feast.

The behaviour of the groom, incensed the family members of the bride who considered a violation to their customs.

An undisclosed cash gifts that were realised at the Ceremony, that were carted away by the groom’s family who have given up on the adventurous conjugal bliss that seems to have turned sour.

Borderline24News said this action infuriated the bride’s family, known as Erele Thomas family from Iruru quarters of Fugar who had complained vehemently perceived act of insubordination.

Violence erupted out between both families, which resulted into a free-for-all after some Fugar youths jumped into the fray on the side of the bride’s family and went in hot pursuit of the vehicle used in conveying the gift items and the said money .

TheNewspad reports that gunshots were fired at the vehicle leading to the death of the brother of the groom, Mr. Godwin Idumane Atsekhagbor when gunmen suspected to be cultists shot him, while rural dwellers and marriage guests, scampered to safety.

Ayogwiri Youths Association, the umbrella body of the group, has send condolences to the bereaved family, while a statement by the spokesman for the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State, SP. Chidi Nwabuzor, is being awaited.
