Edo LGAs pay Sept. salaries ahead of Saturday poll

18 Local government Councils in Edo State have started paying their staffers September salaries, ahead of Saturday September 21st Edo governorship election in the State.

TheNewspad reports that some Local Government Councils, including Oredo staff got their Bank alerts for the month on Friday September 13th 2024.

Council source said Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State handed down the order in deference to the norm when Local government staff are paid between 20th and 23rd monthly.

The policy is perceived by Council staff by the Premier Local government Council to get the buy-in of electorate for political expediency ahead of the forthcoming election.

Some workers commended government move, ahead of Monday September 16th Sallah holiday, but liked a political strategy to entice workers to vote for a particular Candidate at the poll.

On the contrary, others described the payment as a gambit that is borne-out of affection towards its workforce, which had transmute into e-payment platform.

Sources said the chairman of Local government Council, Oredo Council, Dr Tom Obaseki, has finally agreed to pay all outstanding salary arrears of workers before the election.

TheNewspad reports that payment for the remaining Councils, including Egor and Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Councils staff will be sorted out this week Tuesday after Sallah public holiday on Monday September 16.
