Prostitution, drug abuse amongst IDPs ― Zulum

Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum has raised alarm over alleged prostitution in Internally Displaced Persons Camps (IDPs) affected by the recent flood disaster in some parts of Maiduguri.

He dropped the hint during his interview on Satellite Television at the weekend in Borno State where assured of his administration commitment to ending social vices, including drug abuse in IDPs.

“I earlier mention that prostitution is breeding in IDP camps. There is increasing drug abuse”, according to him, “we have seen a lot”.

He said, “We are making a very serious effort to close all the camps. We have seen a lot. We will not allow a reoccurrence of this situation. Whatever we shall do, we will ensure that the camp is a transitional one.

The Governor also assured that the government is updating its social register to ascertain the number of persons that lost their lives and those livelihoods in the disaster.

He assured that the government would expand the membership of flood Committee he set up earlier to manage the crises and collate reliable data.

Zulum further said, “Not all the people that we are feeding in Camps were affected by the flood. Due to poverty. Some people use to troop into the camps with a view to collecting food and non-food items.

“We are taking Census of those in Camps. Soon, we will wind up the process and we will make sure that we have a reliable data”, he said.
