Why Shaibu will be impeached despite initial delay ― ex-legislator

A former member of Edo State House of Assembly, Washington Osifo has predicted that Edo State deputy governor, Mr Philip Shaibu will be impeached by the State house of Assembly.

But Governor Godwin Obaseki said he is not aware of any impeachment plot when he received a delegation of ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in Edo North Senatorial District where Shaibu hails from.

Osifo who represented Uhunmwode Constituency in the 6th Assembly,
made the assertion when he featured on Channels television Sunrise Daily, Monday.

Osifo, who was among the 12 Edo State house of Assembly members-elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 7th Assembly, that were absent when the nocturnal inauguration of the Assembly was made four years ago.

Osifo explained that the process leading to Shaibu’s removal from office by the State House of Assembly, might be delayed for undisclosed reasons.

He said, “I do not know how they (Obaseki and Shaibu) are going to dance, but I know the Governor for one thing; If he (Obaseki) is set on a mission to do something, he doesn’t go back. I can tell you even if his deputy said No! He (Shaibu) rushed to court.

“The impeachment plot against Shaibu is not something that is grounded on suspicion, but on facts. I know both of them. And I can tell you that if there were nothing like that wouldn’t have rushed to seek a restraining order of court in Abuja.

“The only thing that I can tell you is that the impeachment may be delayed, but, it will eventually come to pass because the Governor is not somebody who starts a journey and won’t ruthlessly end it.

“The steps that have been taken by the deputy Governor is not just an alarm, but a balance of conscience”, Osifo said, “2024 governorship election is coming. Governors are they are would generally want to produce their successors.

“The Governor has seen that Philip is not in the line to be considered as as his successor. So, Philip is ambitious and aware of the plot”, according to the former legislator.

Recall that a Federal High court in Abuja had granted the Application of the Petitioner (Philip Shaibu) seeking an order of interlocutory injunction stopping the Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki, the Inspector-General of Police, Department of the State Security Service, Speaker of Edo House of Assembly and the Chief Judge of Edo State to stop the Defendants from intimidating, embarrassing or preventing him from carrying out the functions of his office as deputy Governor of Edo State, including attending State Executive Council (SEC) meetings and other functions, pending the determination of substantive suit before the court.
