Protest: Curfew declared after 16 deaths in Borno

Police authorities have declared a 24-hour curfew in connection with the bomb explosion that claimed the lives of 16 persons late Wednesday July 31st in Borno State.

Mr Nahum Kenneth Daso, the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Command in the State said this in a statement amid the ongoing hunger protests across the nation.

According to Daily Trust,
The curfew which was on the basis of security concern, followed the Improvised Explosive Device, IED Wednesday.

Daso stated that the curfew was declared in the interest of peace across the State, after a bomb ripped though a local tea joint in the State at the eve of the nationwide protests.

The statement reads, “In view of the Constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security and law enforcement agencies toward preservation of law and order in the state.

“You are all aware of the incident that took place at kawori, which was the detonation of improvise explosive devices ordinance device which lead to the death of (16) persons while several others were critically injured and on admission across various Government hospitals in the state.”

“In line with our Constitutional mandate towards the restoration of law and order, His Excellency, the executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum in consultation with heads of security in the state, finds its expedient to declare 24 hours curfew in the State with immediate effect”, the statement said.

Source said the Government may review the curfew after the soon to be held Security Council meeting.

Similarly, the Yobe State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Potiskum, Gashua and Nguru Areas of the State.

The move was necessitated by looting of government property by miscreants who reportedly cashed in on the hardship protest.

Brig. Gen Dahiru Abdussallam (retd), the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security matters, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
