Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District at the National Assembly has mocked some defectors from Peoples Democratic Party, Edo State chapter to the All Progressives Congress by default, likening them to the proverbial ‘prodigal son’ who returned home from a far Country in the Bible.
He had freudian slip at the formal declaration of three members of Edo State House of the Assembly led by its Speaker Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, 18 Local government Council chairmen and their Councillors on Tuesday May 6th 2025 in Benin City, the State Capital.
Congratulating the Speaker of the 24-man Assembly and Hon. Sunny Ifada, representing Esan Central State Constituency as well Nicholas Asonsere, representing Ikpoba-Okha State Constituency, the former two-term Governor stated that the defectors will bring their wealth of experiences to strengthen the winning streak of APC, which he said doesn’t discriminate against new defectors.
Oshiomhole said, “so, Governor when you become the father of a house, and children who left before become prodigal, they are returning home, it means there is still a renewed hope in the father of the House.
“Today, as I am standing here not to receive ‘decampees’ in the person of the Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly. Blessing has been giving more energy. That is to say that his decamping is not exactly correct. If he left the house like I said somewhere else”, according to him.
He argued that the defection has raised the membership strength of APC members in the State House of Assembly to 18, while PDP has been reduced to 8, does make the Legislature rubber stamp Assembly, but it would help fast-track budgeting process for even development of infrastructure across the State for the benefit of residents of Edo State.
Receiving the defectors from PDP into APC, Ajibola Bashiru, national Secretary of Nigeria’s ruling party, said APC is the only party on ground in the State and tasked electorates and party faithful to key into President Bola Tinubu 2027 re-election bid.
In his remarks, Governor Monday Okpebholo stated that 2027 Presidential election “is a done deal for President Tinubu” and promised to mobilize support for his re-election in the State.
Earlier in his address at the rally, the Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, who spoke on behalf of the defectors, assured of a harmonious working relationship between the Executive and the Legislature, while commending the State governor, Monday Okpebholo for the infrastructural department in Edo State.
