Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong has rejected the call by the Nigeria Union of Teacher, calling on its members to embark on a 3-day prayer and fasting for abducted teachers and students of some schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State last Friday.
The incident occurred when terrorists invaded and killing a teacher and a commuter while abducting several others, including a school principal, vice principal, teachers and dozens of pupils from Yawota Basic School, Yawota Community High School and Esinele Community High School.
In a joint statement issued by Salami B. Olukayode,
State Secretary,
Hassan A. Fatai
State Chairman
Salami B. Olukayode
State Secretary
Titilolu Ibukunolu S.
State Treasurer, appealed to members of
members NUT and other affiliate bodies across the state to commit ourselves into a 3 day
fasting and prayers.
The spiritual exercise, according to the statement, is rooted in their respective religious faiths for the safe, speedy and unconditional
release of our dear colleagues held in captivity.
The statement said, “Kindly ensure a joint prayer session by 12:00 noon on
cach of the 3 days across our schools.
“While the government is currently exploring all possible measures through various security
formations to ensure the safety and rescue of the captives, we strongly believe that collective spiritual supplications, will contribute immensely toward achieving a positive outcome in the ongoing rescue missions of the state security outfits”.
Reacting to NUT’s resolution in his social media post, Effiong, condemned the union leaders for what he described as their submissive attitude towards the government despite the worsening insecurity in the state and across Nigeria.
He said, “Instead of declaring a strike action or going on protest at a minimum over the kidnap of their colleagues, the clowns leading the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo State are embarking on a 3-day fasting and prayers.
“They are even making silly excuses for the government. The same government that has failed to protect life and property?
“We have a lot of sick people in this country”, according to Effiong.
