Four confirmed dead in Edo market disaster

Four traders have been confirmed dead and scores injured when huge trees toppled over the popular Jattu market located in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State during Monday morning heavy downpour, reports say.

The identities of the traders who gave up the ghost as a result of the injuries they sustained before emergency responders in the locality cut down trunks that snapped off and trapped them, were removed, while the injured traders were immediately taken to a Health facility for urgent Medical attention.

The traders took shelter under the trees believed to have been in existence for about 100 years after they had displayed their wares before windstorm wrecked havock at the market with a large number of traders.

Mr. Marvellous Zibiri,
chairman, Etsako West Local Government Council confirmed the death four persons to newsmen.

He revealed that the casualties would have been much if not for rain that may have prevented traders and other persons from coming to the market very early.

“Four persons died and have been taken to the mortuary while those who sustain injuries have also been taken to the hospital for treatment,” he said.

TheNewspad reports that the Local Government authority has taken steps to trace relatives of the victims, ahead of the proposed remedial work and livelihood support packages for those who suffered losses in the market disaster.
