Suspended EFCC chairman Bawa in DSS custody, says spokesman

The suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, has spent his first night in the custody of Department of State Services (DSS).

Bawa turned himself into the headquarters of DSS at about 9:02pm few hours after President Bola Tinubu suspended Bawa from office indefinitely for weighty allegations and alleged abuse of office on Wednesday.

Peter Afunanya, the spokesman of the DSS who confirmed Bawa’s presence in a statement, said, “The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, the suspended Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“Bawa arrived a few hours ago. The invitation relates to some investigative activities concerning him”, Afunanya, according to Nigeria’s secret police service.

TheNewspad had reported that President Tinubu through the Director, Information, office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey stated that Bawa’s suspension will allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office, following weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against Bawa.

The Director also directed to immediately handover the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission, pending the conclusion of investigations.

Recall that the President approved the indefinite suspension of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele for alleged corruption in another shake up in the apex Bank.
