Edo residents flee as gully ‘swallows’ 2 houses

Date:

Two houses in Evbo-omore Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State were swallowed in a gully erosion on Thursday evening, months after over 15 houses caved into the gully months ago.

Dependable sources said the incident happened after some residents, including landlords area have relocated, after receiving earlier warning signs that were ignored by concern authorities.

The gully, which is about 150 feet deep, covering a long distance, became a source of worry to residents of Evbo-omore, years after excavation work was carried out around a burrow pit during Benin-Lagos road construction work.

Many residents and landlords in the affected area have been displaced despite assurances by the State and the federal government to address the nuance.

Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, had visited the sites to assess the impact of the gully erosion site, and recommended remediation measures that should be taken.

But the federal government has yet to release ecological funds met to undertake a reclamation work on the site and others, including the gully erosion site that has also claimed a vast portion of land at the University of Benin on Ugbowo Campus.
