71-year-old Edo woman battered for alleged witchcraft

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Command in Estako West Local Government Area of Edo State have rescued 71-year-old woman, Mrs Angelina Asekhamhe from been hacked to death by a mob.

The assault happened at about 9p.m on 31st July 2023 when a man, Mr Fidelis Asekhamhe of Ifashe Quarters of Ivioghe village in Etsako East Local government Area of the State came to the victim’s house in the village.

It was alleged that the native of Agenebode, Etsako East Local government headquarters of the State, was allegedly tortured by youths who accused her of being a witch.

The spokesman of the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State, SP. Chidi Nwabuzor, while responding to the viral video of the assault on the Septuagenarian, said the victim had been rescued and hospitalized.

The incident was earlier lodged in the Area Commander’s office in Etsako West Local government Area, according to him before the assault was put on a spotlight on 03/08/2023 via a petition by the victim’s nephew, Pastor Anthony Omozuapo.

SP. Nwabuzor, stated that one of the suspects in connection to the crime, is in police custody, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other suspects involved in this inhumane act, especially the Principal suspect, Fidelis Asekhamhe.

Nwabuzor noted that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Dankwara frowned at and condemned the barbaric act that was leaked on social media.

He said the CP urged citizens to stop taking laws into their hands, and sued for calm and directed the Area Commander where the incident happened to bring perpetrators to account.

He also urged members of the public liaise with police in handling similar incidents in the future.

Nwabuzor stated that this was after Mrs Angelina Asekhamhe, was accused of been responsible for the untimely death of his son, Henry.
