Sultan calls for ceasefire in Kano Emirates tussle

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has called on parties in the dispute over Kano Emirates tussle to ceasefire and give peace a chance.

The appeal is coming on the back of the appointee and installation of Alhaji Mohammad Sanusi II, as replacement for the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero by Governor Abba Yusuf.

This was after Kano State House of Assembly repealed the law, which ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje used to dethrone Mohammad Sanusi II in 2020.

But on Sunday in a statement by the Sultan, said, “The Chairmanship of His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto notes with concern the situation in Kano as it affects our revered institution.

Abubakar in a statement released by Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council stated with all sense of responsibility called for restraint among parties in the crisis in interest of peace and stability.

He stated however that as the matter has reportedly gone to Court and is therefore sub-judice.

The Council however “prays Almighty Allah for peace to reign in Kano in particular and Nigeria in general”.

Meanwhile, protesters took to the streets of Gaya, one of the five emirates affected by the repealed Kano Emirates Council Law on Sunday.

The protesters were however dispersed by riot police personnel and other security agents.

Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has warned federal government against breakdown of law and order in Kano State, especially the Municipal Area of the State.

On Saturday, Nigeria’s former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku, reminded President Bola Tinubu that Kano State any attempt to destabilise the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted, noting that Kano State “is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years”.

Part of the statement said, “We need to remind the Tinubu administration that Kano State is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years and any attempt to destabilize the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted”

According to him, “The action of the Federal Government in deploying soldiers in Kano in the tussle over the throne of the ancient City is an upset to the peace and security of the state, and also in breach of the 1999 Constitution as Amended.

“The law therefore repealed the 2019 version which balkanized the ancient Kano Emirate into five.

“The foregoing circumstances happened within the confines of the law and in compliance with the powers conferred on the Governor as provided by Section 5(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended; and also in consultation with the Kingmakers of Kano, reappointed Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (also known as Mohammad Sanusi II) as the 16th Emir of Kano State and accordingly handed him a letter of appointment.

“It is surprising that in the early hours of today, exactly at about 5:30 am the former Emir of Kano, His Majesty Aminu Ado Bayero backed by Federal might made their way into the Nasarawa Palace of the Kano Emirate while the reappointed Emir, Mohammad Sanusi II was at the Gidan Dabo, which is the main residence of the Emir of Kano.

“In this wise, the former Emir could not have made his way into the Nasarawa Palace without the support of the Federal Government having done so with the support of the Army and other security personnel in his company.

“The deployment of soldiers in extra Constitutional matters such as this undermines the integrity of the Nigerian military.

“We need to remind the Tinubu administration that Kano State is known for peace and harmony spanning thousands of years and any attempt to destabilize the peace of the Land of Commerce shall be resisted”, Atiku said.
