Police, soldiers clash averted in Benin, residents panic

A bloody clash between police personnel and soldiers has been averted in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

On Wednesday’s night incident happened at a security road block that caused long delay of vehicles on Uselu-Lagos road near Textile Mill road junction.

Trouble started after some armed policemen intercepted a Volkswagen car belonging to a soldier in plain clothes during stop-and search and demanded for the particulars of the vehicle from the driver.

It was learnt that the alleged failure by the angry soldier to comply to the directive, led to a disagreement between them, prompting the unnamed soldier to invited his friends via phone for rescue, underscores the friction.

Suddenly, about five addition armed soldiers stormed the area and engaged the policemen in a shouting match and ordered the release of the car whose Registration is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

Tension grew among residents who stood at a safe distance to watch the superiority tussle between the uniform men who fiddled with their rifles carelessly, in a panicky mood.

A Superintendent of police suspected to be the leader of the stop-and-search team, reconciled the soldiers and policemen and thereafter released the car.

Effort to obtain comments from Capt. Yemi Sokoya, spokesman of the Nigerian Army, 4-Brigade, Benin, proved abortive as he was said to be unavailable.
