Plot to install Hausa King in Benin revealed

The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has uncovered plot by an individual to install Hausa King in Benin City in violation of Benin Tradition and Customary Law applicable to Chieftaincy matters in Edo State.


In a letter by Chief Sam Igbe, the Iyase of Benin dated April 18, 2024 and addressed to Commissioner of Police, Director of State Security Service, DSS, and the Nigerian Army, said Oba of Benin has not given consent to, or approved the turbaning or conferment of Chieftaincy title by whatever name.

The move was in response to a public announcement by “His Royal Highness Alh. Adamu Isah Adamu” who arogated to himself as “Sarkin Hausawa” plan to perform a Turbaning Ceremony in which one “Alh. Danjuma Garba Binkola” will be installed as “Garkuwan Hausawa Benin” on Sunday 5th May, 2024 at No. 7 Butcher Street, Off Mission Road, Benin City.

Igbe said, “He (Oba Ewuare II) has not permitted any person by the name “His Royal Highness Alh. Adamu Isah Adamu” to hold any such Ceremony in Benin City or any other part of Edo South Senatorial District, Edo State”.

The State government is yet-to react the planned installation, which has become one too many in Edo State under the administration of the outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki.
