A drug enforcement mission turned tragic when an unnamed official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reportedly drowned in a river last weekend in the Obiaruku area of Delta State.
According to reports, the incident occurred while operatives were trailing a group of young men suspected of dealing in illicit drugs.
Upon noticing the agents, the suspects jumped into a river in an attempt to escape arrest.
The officers pursued them into the water, but one of the operatives reportedly ran into difficulty and drowned.
The incident has left local residents deeply concerned, though the exact circumstances surrounding the officer’s death remain unclear.
Meanwhile, a viral video shows residents of Obiaruku besieging the scene of the tragedy.
Some bystanders and local youths expressed grief as the lifeless body of a dark-skinned man lay by the riverbank.
An official statement from the NDLEA is still being awaited regarding the incident in the locality, which is widely known as a hotbed for illicit drugs.
