Operatives of the Nigeria Police have gun down a member of a notorious armed robbery syndicate that attacked a Jewelry shop on Saturday July 29th 2023 at Ikenegbu area in Imo State.

Two members of syndicate were arrested, while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries after a gun battle with the Police led by the Commoner of Police in the State, CP. Mohammed Barde.

The spokesman of the Police Command in the State, Henry Okoye who represented CP. Barde, disclosed this during a parade of suspected criminals and exhibits in Owerri, the State Capital.

He revealed that police acted on a swift follow-up to a distress call received from a civic-minded resident of the State that hoodlums attacked the shop and looted gold worth about N500 million.

Omoye said when CP Barde received the information on the attack, he quickly mobilized and led the Command’s Tactical team against the hoodlums numbering about seven, armed with sophisticated weapons came with a white Hilux vehicle covered plate number.

On sighting police operatives, the hoodlums opened fire, but the hoodlums were overwhelmed by the dexterity showcased by the gallant operatives who maneuvered into vintage position and return fire, forcing the hoodlums to succumb to their superior fire power.

The statement explained that in the gun duel that ensued, one of the hoodlum was neutralized, two were arrested while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries in the encounter.

During a search on the suspects conducted by the police at the scene, two (2) pump action guns, four (4) locally made pistol and eight (8) rounds of live cartridges, one (1) expanded cartridges from the hoodlums.

These were in addition to the white helix used for the operation with Registration No. BRR 586 XA, that is after removing the black cloth used in covering the plate number.

Jewelry valued millions of Naira, two military under polo T-shirt, two special forces t-shirts, Bags containing other stolen items, were among the exhibits that were recovered from the hoodlums.

The statement also said non the shop owners or customers were hurt during the operation, while manhunt is intensified to arrest other fleeing suspects and the manufacturers of the locally made pistols.

The statement, assured that the arrested suspects will be investigated thoroughly and arraigned in court upon completion of a discreet investigation by the Command’s Tactical Team, while the body of neutralized suspect has been deposited at the morgue.

The Commissioner of Police commended the operatives for a job well-done and urged them to sustain the tempo in the ongoing crusade against all forms of crime and criminality in the State.
