The Federal University of Technology, FUTO, Owerri in Imo State, students’ Union Government, has announced the suspension of all academic activities, including lectures and practicals, pending official clarification on the death of a student in Man O’ War custody on the institution’s Campus.
The suspension of all lectures, practicals, tests, and academic activities for all levels for a period of one (1) week, commencing Monday, 1st June 2026 to Friday 5th June 2026.
The 100 Level student of Cyber Security in the institution, identified only as Chibuzor allegedly died in Man O’ War guard room where he was assaulted and detained over allegation that he stole the sum of N13,000 cash belonging to the Commandant of the paramilitary group.
But the SUG position is contained in a Communique dated May 31st 2026, and jointly endorsed by its Secretary-General, Comrade Mark Christopher and President, Christopher Chukwuebuka.
It expressed regret over the failure of the Management of FUTO to comment on incident, despite repeated correspondence it sent to the school’s Management as it concerns students, led to the decision.
Part of the Communique reads: “The Students’ Union Government (SLUG), FUTO, addresses the student Community regarding the reported death of a FUTO student, allegedly involving members of the Man War.
“This incident has sparked widespread concern and demands for justice. The SUG has repeatedly communicated with University Management and relevant authorities through the Dean of Student Affairs regarding cases of brutality and students safety.
“Regrettably, no decisive action was taken until this tragedy occurred. In light of the gravity of this matter and to demand transparency and accountability, the SUG hereby suspends all lectures, practicals, tests, and academic activities for all levels for a period of one (1) week, commencing Monday, 1st June 2026 to Friday 5th June 2016.
“This suspension will remain untill Management provides 1. A detailed official statement on the incident”, it said in addition, “Concrete steps being taken for investigation and justice”.
“Verifiable measures to prevent reoccurrence”, according to the SUG, remains committed to protecting the welfare, safety, and dignity of all FUTO students.
“We urge everyone to remain palm, peaceful, and law abiding while we pursue justice Further updates will be communicated through official SUG charts”, according to the SUG.
Police authority in the State has confirmed the arrest of three murder suspects in connection with the incident, which the management of the institution has yet to issue a statement on.
