EXCLUSIVE: How Nigerian faked mad to hide poisoned wife’s death

A 45-year-old housewife, who went to bed with food poisoning in her matrimonial home in Uhie village, Ikpoba-Okha Local government Area of Edo State, is dead.

A family source said Mrs Esther Esewi Ogbonmwan, died in the presence of her husband, Mr Friday Ogbonmwan who allegedly waited patiently for her to die after having dinner on July 15 in their residence.

The tragedy, triggered public expression of grief among the family members of the decease and the people of Uhie, happened after a quarrel broke out between her and her husband, Mr Friday Ogbonmwan’s premeditated murder, was faked as mental illness to cover up his tracks from arrest and charge with murder.

A member of the deceased family, Mr Osarumense Ogbonmwan, who resides in Bright street, in Uhie village, reported the incident at Ologbo Police Division on July 16, 2023.

Osarumwense, told the police that he and his grandmother, Mrs Patience Usoh, left Edo street, Upper Sokponba community in the Council Area and check on his mother, Mrs Esther Esewi Ogbonmwan at the deceased at Uhie at about 6a.m on the fateful day.

The terrified family member, Osarumwense, in company of his brother-in-law, Mr Franklin Ani from the neighbouring Ogheghe Community, explained that when they arrive Ogbonmwan’s family house, the apartment was locked, and they began to knock at the door without any response.

According to him, after knocking at the deceased family door and there was no response, they were left with the option of breaking through the door and discovered the lifeless body of his mother on the floor naked inside her bedroom, while foam gushed out of her mouth.

He also alleged that murder suspect, who is a commercial bus driver that shuttles New Benin and 2nd East Circular Road in Oredo Local government Area of the State, disguised as a mentally deranged man denied killing his wife.

The spokesman of the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State, SP. Chidi Nwabuzor confirmed the incident to our Correspondent.

He said the murder suspect could not give a satisfactory account of his wife’s death and was arrested by the police.

Pathologists will conduct autopsy examination on the deceased to ascertain the cause of her death, SP. Nwabuzor said, the Divisional Police officer (DPO) led a team of police operatives to recover Mrs Esther Ogbonmwan’s body at the crime scene after the tragedy.

“The presence of foam that come out from the mouth of the deceased actually gave the Indication that she took poison”, the police image maker said.

He stated that the deceased was deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Women and Children’s hospital, Benin mortuary for preservation.

“Immediately, the DPO the complaint, he moved to the crime scene with his men and met the lifeless body of late Mrs Esther Ogbonmwan.

“The State Commissioner of Police, immediately ordered investigation into the murder case, while the arrest of the husband was made.

“The case has been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at the police headquarters in Benin City, for diligent investigation and prosecution”, Nwabuzor said.
