Court grants Enugu Couple N5m bail for alleged land grabbing

Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court, Enugu Division has granted N5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira) bail to a Couple, Mr Udeani Simon Sunday and his wife, Udeani Dorcas Amaka in an alleged land grabbing to the tune of N2,750,000.00 (Two Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira).

Justice Umar held that the N5 million is in like sum, while the surety must be a Civil servant not below grade level 10 and residing within the jurisdiction of the Court.

The Couple was arraigned before the Court on three-count
charges in a case which was preferred against them by Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The Court adjourned till February 6, 2024, after the accused had pleaded not guilty to the charges, after the prosecuting Counsel, Nurudeen Ingawa had prayed the court for a trial date, while the defence Counsel, E.C. Nwauba Esq made an application for their bail.

A statement in EFCC website said, one of the charges against the Udeanis read: “That you Udeani Simon Sunday and Udeani Dorcas Amaka, between 10th July 2019 to 19th December 2019 in Enugu, Enugu State, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with intent to defraud, induced one Onugu Angela Chinyere to deliver to you the sum of Two Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand, Naira (N2,750,000.00)”.

The charge further said, “under the pretence that you would sell to her a plot of land behind Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ala-Uguaji along Enugu/Port Harcourt Road, which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1 (3) of the same act”.
