CJN headlines books launch on judgment writing, lawyers lifestyle

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat M. O. Kekere-Ekun will on Wednesday 13th day of November 2024 headline the public presentation of two books authored and co-authored by former Chief Judge of Edo State Justice Esohe F. Ikponmwen.

The books titled The Art and Essentials of Judgment Writing and Becoming a Classic and Trending Lawyer.

Through a blend of theory and practical examples, the books aim to equip readers with the essential skills required to communicate to diverse audiences, while upholding the ethical standards of the profession, are intended for judges, legal practitioners, adjudicators, law teachers, law students, businessmen, and government personalities.

A statement by Organizing Committee for the launch of the event at the Ceremonial Hall of the High Court of Justice, Sapele Road, Benin City, Edo State, begining at 12noon.

The CJN Kekere-Ekun, is one of the special guests of the honour, while the chairman on the occasion is the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Iyobosa Okungbowa.

Also, the Chief Launcher is Prince Charls and Princess Iyobosa Amadi in addition to other
dignitaries who are expected at the event which will also feature the Chief Judge of Delta, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom States, members of National and State Assembly, President of the NBA, Mr. Afam Osigwe and other Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Chairman of the NBA Edo State, Chairperson of FIDA, Deans of law, captains of industry and other legal luminaries.

The keynote speaker is Justice Tinu Akomolafe-Wilson, JCA Rtd and the book’s reviewers are Justice Victor Oviawe of the High Court of Edo State and Prof. Violet Okosun-Aigbokhaevbo, former Dean of Faculty of Law, University of Benin, according to Organizers of the event.

Specifically, the book launch is principally to raise funds in aid of the training and mentoring of aspiring female lawyers currently supported by the Hon. Justice Esohe Frances Ikponmwen Foundation since 2021. Eight female law students will be given awards during the book launch.

The book on judgment writing unveils the secrets behind creating compelling and persuasive judicial opinions. The book was co-authored by Justice Esohe Frances Ikponmwen, the former Chief Judge of Edo State and Gladys Omage, a Canadian-based dual practicing lawyer.

They draw upon their wealth of experience to create a compelling narrative that transcends the boundaries of the traditional legal Literature and introduces a comprehensive framework that covers the entire scope of judgment writing – from the initial analysis of complex legal issues to the art of formulating well-reasoned decisions that stand the test of time.

The second book — Becoming a Classic & Trending Lawyer offers an in-depth exploration of what it means to excel in the legal profession today, while also drawing on the timeless virtues that have always defined great lawyers.

The author — Justice Ikponmwen wrote the book from her personal experience and that of other distinguished practitioners to make a stable to practical guide note for young lawyers eager to carve a niche for themselves. The book has eight chapters and it identifies communication skills as the strongest component of a trending lawyer.

Justice Ikponmwen (Rted), was the Chief Judge of Edo State (2017-2019) and is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Justice Esohe Frances Ikponmwen Foundation.
