CAN protests signposts’ taxes on churches in Abia

The leadership Christian association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed displeasure over the Abia State government policy, compelling churches operating in the State to pay taxes on signposts.

In a petition, authored Abia State chapter of chairman of CAN, Reverend Ojo Oduma with the Secretary, Reverend Francis E. Ekere, dated October 22, 2024 and addressed to Governor Alex Otti titled, “Taxation of churches signposts in Abia State”, the group is appealing to the Governor back down on the implementation.

The protest letter of the association, said it’s regrettable that God’s own Abia State is the only State in the whole Federation that is taxing churches on their signposts.

“We therefore passionately plead with your Excellency as a matter of urgency to carefully look into the matter of urgency to carefully look into matter and possibly rescind this policy to avoid compelling the body of Christ in the State from seeing this regime as being anti church”.

The religious group Organization also requested for a meeting with Governor Otti and leaders of CAN to discuss the way forward on what it termed “very little, but delicate issue”.
