Thieves steal crops in outskirts of UNIBEN

Thieves have invaded and harvest crops in farms between the outskirts of University of Benin (Ugbowo Campus) and neighbouring Communities in Benin.

Recall that the University was shut down indefinitely by its Management in July, after students protest due to power rationing arising outrageous electricity Bill by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and other issues of concern.

One of the grieving farmers, alleged that his crops were harvested by hoodlums who latched on August 1st #EndBadGovernance protest while he couldn’t access his farm during the nationwide unrest.

The farmer and staff of the University, alleged that he lost over 100 bunches of plantains in the land of the University, encroached upon by ‘land grabbers’.

He said he had planned to harvest the unripe plantains, which were due for harvest, and use part of the proceed to pay his workers.

TheNewspad reports that the farmer who declined giving his name as a staff, stated that he has decided to leave vengeance to God.

“My salary can no longer take me and my family. In order not to steal, I decided to farm. The decision was a difficult one to take. After farming in the sun and rain.

“I was shocked when I came yesterday, I discovered that my farm has been invaded by thieves and over 100 plantains have been harvested. I wept”, he said, “I am helpless”.

Angry Nigerians took to the streets on Thursday’s nationwide hunger protests against President Bola Tinubu’s regime in response to the worsening food crisis arising from his economic policies after the removal of subsidy on petroleum products.
