Pharmacist Tom Obaseki, the Chairman of Oredo Local government Council on Monday January 5, 2024 began enforcement of N1,000 (One Thousand Naira) registration code for each wheelbarrow used for commercial purpose in the Council.
The special code which is subject to renewal after one year, is met to check criminal activities and sure up the Council’s revenue, as well as enhance additional N50.00 daily levy for each wheelbarrow pushers.
The initiative is also expected to regulate activities of wheelbarrow pushers across markets and vehicle parking lots, and bus terminals in the Council where a wheelbarrow pusher committed suicide after stabbing Oredo revenue collector to death in December 2023.
No fewer than 40 wheelbarrows have been allegedly impounded by the Council since the enforcement began by a Special Taskforce, raised by the Council to clampdown defaulters and sanction revenue collectors who fail to meet up with their daily target.
TheNewspad reports that Vulcanizers levy which use to be N5,000 monthly has been hiked alongside Car wash levy and other business premises in the Council.
Investigation revealed that most heads of Departments in Oredo Local government Council had been redeployed from the Council’s Secretariat over allegations of corruption leveled against some of the officials.
As part of measures to check indolence, lateness, and sharp practices of Council workers by the Council boss has installed Close Circuit Camera television (CCTV) at the Secretariat at the King square.
During his recent tour of some markets in the Council, Tom Obaseki, vowed to utilize the Council revenues and tackle the needs of residents of the Area.
There are indications that these investments may be allowed to go to waste if the revenue streams are not put into proper use by successive administration after the tenure of Local government Executives of the ruling Peoples Democratic party in Edo State.
