Customs impound, turn over N1.4bn fake drugs to agency

The Nigeria Customs Service has impounded fake and expired drugs with N1.4 billion (One Million Naira and Four Million) Duty Paid Value (DPV) in addition to other confiscated contraband.

The expired pharmaceuticals traced to India, tagged “Labumol” and “Libumol” a supposed analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic for pain relief, conveyed in forty-one (41) containers, were intercepted by operatives of Federal Operations Unit, Zone “A” of the agency.

The drugs without any manufacturing or expiry date were cumulation from September 2022 till date, according to Ejibunu.

He thereafter handed over the fake drugs to the the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA through Mr Francis Ononiwu, Director of Investigation and Enforcement.

Ononiwu, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for taking off the drugs from the Society shortly after receiving the signed document of the transferred fake drugs.

According to him, “If the drugs were not confiscated by the Nigeria Customs Service and it enters into circulation, the owners will change the expiry date and re-label by putting the current date.

“The drugs expired in November 2021, what makes a drug potent is the active constituents which have to meet the regulatory requirements. No doubt the content in the drugs is toxic”, Ononiwu said.
