58 inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Custodial Centres have begun a new career path, with their matriculation in National Open University of Nigeria, underscoring the broader role of rehabilitation and reintegration.
The initiative behind the 2026/2027 academic session, is geared towards building capacity and drive the ambitions aimed at equipping inmates with knowledge and horne the skills for life beyond incarceration.
The disciplines of the admitted students cut across Political Science, Economics, Peace and Conflict Management, Computer Science, Entrepreneurship and Religious studies.
Addressing matriculants Correctional authorities, academia, and other stakeholders in the justice sector at the Old Abeokuta Custodial Study Centre, Ibara, the National Open University of Nigeria Centre Director, Prof. Oyekunle Adegboyega, enjoined the students to use the opportunity offered by their training to transform lives and prepare for better future.
“Remain steadfast in pursuit of knowledge. May your minds be sharpen, your character strengthened, and your aspirations fulfilled”, he said while declaring the event themed, “preparing for life after incarceration; Beyond the bars to a sustainability”, opened.
Taiyo Oriyomi, a top official of who delivered the goodwill message of the Controller of Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS in Ogun State, challenged the 56 undergraduates, one Masters Degree and PhD students on innovation and at the historic event which was marked by moment of inspiration.
According to him, “The path that you have chosen is demanding with the Correctional environment, which requires enough passion and discipline”.
He urged the newly admitted students to protect the opportunity that many outside the walls craved for education that you are receiving today”, noting that the Correctional Service has received a lot of reformation.
