The reported escape of over 119 inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre located in Suleja, Niger State has sent jitters down the spines of residents.
The escape occurred after hours of heavy downpour which destroyed parts of the facility which was built during the colonial era, on Wednesday night, the spokesman for Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), FCT Command, Adamu Duza said this in a statement.
“A heavy downpour that lasted for several hours on the night of Wednesday, 24 April 2024 has wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Suleja, Niger State, as well as surrounding buildings, destroying part of the custodial facility, including its perimeter fence, giving way to the escape of a total of 118 inmates of the facility”, according to Dazu.
But Dazu assured that the Service has immediately activated its recapturing mechanisms, and in conjunction with sister security agencies has so far recaptured 10 fleeing inmates and taken them into custody, while still in a hot chase to recapture the rest.
He said all Custodial Centres that are weak will soon give way for better ones and appealed to the public not to fret over the incident, but look out for the fleeing inmates and report same to the nearest security inmates.
TheNewspad reports that security has been needed up around the Custodial Centres in the State by a combined team of security personnel.
The governor Mohammed Umar Bago with security officers is scheduled to visit the Custodial Centre before on Thursday for on-the spot assessment of the facility where audit of inmates have began.
