UNIBEN shuttle raises cost of transportation

University of Benin (UNIBEN) Shuttle Committee in conjunction with the students body has approved upward review of transportation cost on Campuses and other routes in Edo State, effective July 1st 2024.

The hike is part of strategies to beat high operation as a result of increase in pump price of petroleum products after the subsidy era in a to boost revenue and enhance services.

Collins Obhiozele and James Olawale, Secretary and Secretary, University of Benin Students’ Union Electoral Commission disclosed this in a statement after due consultation meeting with UNIBEN shuttle Committee.

The statement said Cab fare has been increase from N150 to N200 while shuttle fare will attract N100 across Ugbowo and Ekehuan Campuses, while shuttle transportation between the University and New Benin market and King Square will attract N300 and N250 respectively.

Under the new pricing, boarding a cab by an individual on UNIBEN Campus will cost N400, the statement, which sued for strict compliance by UNIBEN students who were advised to look out for deviants and report appropriately.

The statement said the University’s shuttle Committee has assured the students’ group that they will issue warnings and establish an enforcement team to address drivers’ refusal to ply certain destinations and check unauthorized fare hike.

The statement also commended the students for their understanding and cooperation in this period of power outage in the University, assuring that that steps have been taken to address the challenge.

Part of the statement reads, “while this compromise did not meet the driver’s demands, we successfully negotiated a balance between their needs and those of the students, who are also facing challenges”.

“We addressed drivers’ refusal to visit certain destinations and authorized fare increase.
And the shuttle service Committee has assured us that they will issue warnings and establish an enforcement team to ensure compliance”, the statement said.
