UNIBEN security agents disarm hoodlum with riffle on Campus

By TheNewspad

Tragedy was averted on Wednesday January 17th 2024 when security agents disarm a hoodlum with a double barrel gun at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Benin City main gate.

UNIBEN Management had stepped up surveillance on its Campuses in the wake of the recent cult-related killings in some parts of Edo State.

A source said the hoodlum attempted to smuggle the arm through the school’s main gate on Ugbowo Campus when the gunrunner was intercepted.

“The boy kept the rifle in his bag. It was during stop and search by one of the security personnel on duty, the gun was discovered.

“I do not know what came over him. Immediately, he was disarmed by security, he was taken to crime office”, according to the source.

The source called for high vigilance in the University, particularly entry points into the school shortly ahead the resumption of the 2nd Semester Academic activities weeks ago.

The source also commended the security personnel on duty for their specialized skills and bravery.

Another staff of the University who claimed to be on the Campus as at the time of the incident, lamented that security personnel in the University lack motivation.

He also blamed the menace on difficulties encountered by UNIBEN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami in securing the federal government approval to recruit staff despite several pleas in the past.

According to him, “UNIBEN is under staffed, as a result, there is shortage of staff in most Departments and Units.

“The Vice Chancellor in her wisdom is the one that pays the ad-hoc staff from the monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which is no longer enough for a fast growing tertiary institution like UNIBEN”.

TheNewspad Correspondent’s effort to reach the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State, SP. Chidi Nwabuzor to ascertain if the alleged gunrunner is in police custody, were unsuccessful.
