A resident of Benin has reportedly drowned in an open drainage on Ugbowo Lagos Road by Iyobanosa street junction, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, fuelling outrage.
The stench from the yet-to-be identified victim that was trapped inside the drainage after a heavy downpour that set residents of the area and passersby on edge.
The drainage was reconstructed by past administration of Adams Oshiomhole in Edo State during the dualization of the Expressway by the federal government when Mr Osarodion Ogie was the Commissioner for Works in the State.
Some business owners and residents of Uselu are calling on Egor Local Government Council Authorities to evacuate the decease in a bid to prevent outbreak of a potential epidemic.
A resident of the area told TheNewspad Reporter that they initially thought that it was a fetish items that were kept at the junction by a traditional Physician in the area untill they sighted the decomposing body of the victim recently.
It was gathered that the tragedy occured opposite the another opened drainage system by 2nd Omozogie street by Uselu Lagos Road where a 6-year-old child got drowned in the flood while returning from a school in the locality barely 10 years ago.
TheNewspad recalled three months old baby strapped on her mother’s back, were rescued by concerned youths jumped into the drainage and pulled her out alive.
But her six-year-old child whom she held with her hand while navigating the flood after a heavy showers, was swept away through the raging flood in the drainage while returning home.
But, efforts by a search party deployed to recover the body of the pupil across 5-junction Okhoro Dam in Egor LGA and Ikpoba River in Ikpoba-Okha LGA after three days were unsuccessful.
Investigation revealed that former State government then sent high-power delegation to console the bereaved family in Iyesogie street, off Oro street and quietly donated the sum of N500,000 to the family.
Trouble started when some youths who participated in the search and rescue effort learned about the cash gift, they quickly mobilized to the residence of the bereaved family to demand for their own share from the money.
But, the be revealed family had fled their home to an unknown destination to mourn their lost child.
Consequently, some angry youths staged bonfire on Textile Mill road junction by Uselu Lagos Road in a bid to draw the government attention to the casualties associated with the open system, which the past government said it was left open for easy access to desilt when the need arises.
Investigation also revealed that after several harassment, the bereaved family secretly packed from their rented apartment in area to an undisclosed location over fear of a possible mob attack on them.
Meanwhile, a victim of one chance robbery gang inside their operational vehicle and thereafter pushed out to death from a moving vehicle has regained consciousness.
The middle-aged woman who was pushed into the 6 feet gutter near a Uselu Town Hall, was rescued by sympathetic Nigerians who admitted to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Ugbowo in Benin for medical attention on Tuesday morning.
An artisan who joined in rescuing the victim stated that the woman who is responding to treatment in hospital, had bruises on her body with a fractured leg.
