TCN: No casualty as 330kV line bursts into flames at Edo market

Tragedy was averted when 330kV electricity line bursts into flames around Egor market on Thursday morning in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

 

No casualty was recorded in the incident that caused commotion amongst businesses owners and residents in the locality where thick smoke billowed

high into the sky.

 

The sound of sparks buzzing into the power line, and sparks, leaving many residents scampering to safety, others injured during the reported national grid voltage instability, the spokesman of TCN, Ndidi Mbah said in a statement, blamed power supply disruption that on 25th June 2026, in the Lagos complex on the power disruption.

 

The fire eventually abated after about one hour as angry residents, expressed disappointment over the delayed response of the Edo State fire service, which they claimed arrived hours after the incident had occurred.

 

The shocking incident attracted the attention of a motley of angry youths in the area, who chased the fire service officials away over the delayed and ineffective response to the emergency.

 

A women leader at the market was caught on camera rolling on the ground in appreciation to God for averting tragedy at the market and the neighborhood.

 

Speaking in an interview with journalists, she lamented the danger the power line poses to traders and customers at the market.

 

A resident in the area alleged that the inferno lasted for over one hour before it abated. When the fire service men arrived, boys chased them away. This fire started here. I became worried. When I came out to peep outside, I heard a loud explosion.

 

“Suddenly, there was fire that flew to heaven. The fire returned and cut off the wire”, the resident said.

 

Osamagbe Obiti, said for sometimes, they began to hear a strange sound from the power line. We suddenly heard a loud sound on Thursday, and the neighborhood began to experience shock.

 

One person was shocked and currently receiving medical attention at hospital.

 

Also speaking, Imafidon Sylvanus, said they scampered for safety after the power line exploded, while a nearby shop underneath the power line, caught fire.

 

The incident has raised concern about public safety regulatory standards and emergency response time as well as the risk associated with businesses beneath power transmission lines in Nigeria.
