The Presidency has confirmed the arrest of Ifechukwu Dennis, the man identified as the originator of an AI-generated leaked voice note recording that was attributed to President Bola Tinubu.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said on Thursday that the criminal suspect was arrested in Benin, ending a week-long controversy that began on May 27.
The incident happened when a video of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, was wrongly accused of publishing the AI-generated video after a background check by security agents.
Some netizens on social media space have charged Nigeria security agencies to deploy the same effort that led to Ifechukwu arrest to rescue kidnapped Oyo school teachers and pupils and other Nigerians in captivity.
Baba Sadeeq wrote: “The energy channelled to arrest this man should’ve been channelled to track and arrest bandits and kidnappers.
Nigerians would’ve been happier and celebrate for that”.
Another social media user, Bukoladeremi Ladigbolu, wondered why operatives of the crack Team cant crack those benefitting from kidnapping and banditry.
He said, “crack team that cant crack those benefitting from evil in the land.
Yes if this boy is guilty as charged, let him serve as a deterrent to others”.
Uchenna Eze also wrote: “What about those that display cash on tiktok! So because this affects Mr president directly hence all resources were put forward to arrest him. Let us fear God o”.
“Oh your tracker can track those In town what about bandits and kidnapper? Adamu Lawal queried while responding to the arrest.
Other social media users, urged the Presidential spokesman to apologize to Very Dark Man, for threatening to arrest him over the AI-generated footage, shared on his social media handles.
