Sallah: 11 killed in Edo road crash

Tragedy struck when a Dangote truck rammed into a Toyota Hummer Bus on Benin-Lagos highway on Thursday, killing 11 people.

Eight persons succumbed to injury in the tragedy that occurred few minutes past 9 in the morning at Ovia river bridge in Ovia North East Local government Area of Edo State.

The accident victims were returning from a trip after the Eid-El-Kabir Sallah festival, according to well-placed sources.

The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr. Okpe Paul confirmed the incident in a phone conversation with TheNewspad.

He revealed that the accident victims had been evacuated in ambulances by FRSC officials to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, while the roads were also cleared the highway, which convulsed in gridlock caused by the obstruction for hours.

Mr. Okpe who participated in the rescue operation by the Commission with the support of other kind-hearted Nigerians, advised drivers to drive with Road Safety caution particularly during the wet season.

According to Mr Okpe who did not disclose the particulars of the vehicles involved in the accident, said, “A truck owned by Dangote rammed into a Toyota Hummer Bus on a bridge at Ovia River at past 9 this morning. 11 persons lost their lives and eight others got injured”.

“Both the injured and dead persons were moved to UBTH by our ambulances and others. And we have cleared the obstruction. So, the road is free for now.

“We advice the motoring public to be at alert and drive with all Road Safety caution so that they can arrive their location safely “.
