Nigeria’s House of Representatives on rejected the proposed conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) national honour on the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.
The lower chamber demanded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), which was accorded to Senate President Akpabio and the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Kekere-Ekun.
According to Leadership Newspaper, the resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance, the House of Representatives, argued that CFR honour as too low for a ranking officer of Speaker of the 10th National Assembly.
Hon. Philip Agbese, a lawmaker from Benue State sponsored the motion, which had the support of other members of the green Chamber stated that the Speaker of House of Representatives should receive the same higher GCON honour as Akpabio and Kekere-Ekun.
During his nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, President Bola Tinubu, announced plans. to confer national honours of GCON for Senate President Godswill Akpabio and CJN Kudirat Kekere-Ekun while Speaker Abbas was conferred with CFR, among other beneficiaries at a date that is yet-to-be announced by the federal government.
Netizens have began to berate the lawmakers, with some accusing elected public officers of bereavement of ideas, amid economic crisis.
