The Commissioner of police in Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, on Wednesday read the riot act to political figures and party leaders, while urging them to shun conduct that could undermine public safety.
The CP’s warning, is conveyed in a statement by the spokesman of the Nigeria police Command in Nasarawa State, SP Ramhan Nansel, following a violent clashes between supporters of rival political party aspirants in parts of the State, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement which was silent on the exact location the incident that resulted in the destruction of property, vandalisation of campaign billboards, and damage to vehicles, occurred in the State.
It also cautioned “politicians, their supporters, and political groups against engaging in political rallies, processions, and other forms of campaigns in violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act”, which it further stated will be enforced strictly.
“Section 98 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, stipulates that political campaigns shall commence not earlier than one hundred and fifty (150) days before polling day and shall end twenty-four (24) hours prior to the day of the election”, according to the police statement.
“Accordingly, all political parties, aspirants, support groups, and their agents are advised to strictly comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act regarding the commencement and conduct of political campaigns, rallies, processions, meetings, and other related activities”, the police statement added.
The statement also vowed to prosecute merchants of violence and their collaborators, while urging parents, guardians, community leaders, and political stakeholders to discourage unlawful practices henceforth.
