The Nigeria police, Ekeki police Division, refused taking a suspect who was apprehended vandalizing electricity cables on Mike Okpokpor road at Kpansia, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State Capital.
The incident occurred barely two days after power was restored after the residents contributed money to fix the damaged facility, the vandals returned again.
One of the serial criminal suspect of Ogbia area in the State, that was beaten to stupor, was apprehended by youths, who tied to the iron bars around the transformer, and thereafter paraded him to the police station.
The suspect claimed to be a criminal gang members that sometime in March 2026, stole the cables from the same transformer, plunging the streets in the area into darkness for more than two months.
TheNewspad investigation revealed that a mild drama ensued when a Divisional police officer, DPO, ordered residents to immediately take the suspect to a health facility and treat him before taking him into police custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The verdict by the police officer, which was discontinued to be out of order by the residents, who presented footages of the crime scene, heightened tension, before the suspect was detained after the residents, complied with the police directive.
A social media user, Daniel Alabra wrote: “I have just been informed that the police at Ekeki Division said the vandal was beaten to stupor and that the Mike Okpokpor residents should go treat the alleged thief.
“You can see why people subscribe to the reprehensible act of jungle justice”, according to the witness account.
