Police arrest LP national chairman, Abure, 4 others, supporters spit fire

Operatives of the Nigeria Police have arrested and detained the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Julius Abure, alongside Edo State Chairman of the party, Kelly Ogbaloi and three other member executives.

He was taken into police custody on Wednesday at the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police headquarters in Benin City, Edo State.

The LP national Chairman’s arrest, followed a petition from the office of the Inspector-General of Police in Abuja to AIG, Zone 5.

TheNewspad reports that Abure was reportedly manhandled by security agents, while LP members and supporters fought to prevent his arrest.

Spokesman of the AIG, Zone 5, SP. Tijani Momoh confirmed Abure’s arrest to newsmen on Wednesday, paving the way for investigation.

“There is a standing order for now that nobody should come in.

“Yes the Labour Party National Chairman is here and it has to do with a petition  that was referred to this office from the Inspector-General of Police.

“It was referred to Zone 5 from the IG’s office. He (Abure) is with us but I cannot give the contents of the petition right now”, SP. Tijani said.

The national leadership of LP has being enmeshed in a plethora of scandals arising from avalanche of petitions and litigations from the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

Abure was also accused of forgery, substitution of Candidates names in the 2023 polls and embezzlement of funds, donated by philanthropic individuals and groups to prosecute the election of LP Presidential Candidate in the election, Peter Obi amongst others.
