Nigerian jailed two years for impersonating American soldier

 

A Federal High Court, Kaduna Division has jailed a Nigerian, Jesse Joshua Kassah who impersonated Devaun Smith Wayne; a United States of America soldier.

Justice Darius Khobo convicted the accused on Monday November 20th 2023, after pleading guilty to one-count charge after he was arraigned by the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

EFCC had arraigned the Convict who posed as a ticket salesman and defrauded Caitlin Morgan on Facebook (an online social media application) between January to October, 2023, on one count charge, bothering on impersonation.

Arising from his plea, prosecution Counsel M. Arumemi urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly, while the Judge thereafter convicted and sentenced Kassah to two years imprisonment with an option of N150, 000.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) fine.

The trial Judge also ordered the forfeiture of Samsung Galaxy A02 phone which was used to commit the offence to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Kassah’s journey to the Correctional Centre started when he was arrested at Karji area of Kaduna for internet-related offences, according to a statement that was published on EFCC website on Monday.

Investigations showed that he impersonated an American soldier, Devaun Smith Wayne and used his identity to defraud his victims in the process.
