Niger police vow justice for food vendor burnt alive

Date:

The Nigeria police Authorities have begun investigation into the murder of a food vendor identified only as Amaye who was accused of blasphemy by suspected mob at the Kasuwar-Garba community in the Mariga Local Government Area in Niger State.

The victim was allegedly whisked her away, and set her ablaze, following accusation of making blasphemous remarks against Prophet Mohammed.

Spokesman of the Nigeria police Command in Niger State, SP Wasiu Abiodun disclosed this while reacting to demand for justice by some Nigerians.

The police spokesman assured that those found culpable will be brought to justice.

He said the Command received the report around 2:00 p.m. that the woman had allegedly made blasphemous remarks.

“Before additional reinforcements could be deployed, the crowd overpowered our officers, whisked her away, and set her ablaze,” he said.

A human rights lawyer, Malcolm Omirhobo has
condemned in the strongest terms the lynching of Ammaye in Niger State.

“I condemn in the strongest terms the lynching of Ammaye in Niger State. There is no crime of “blasphemy” under Nigerian law.

“I hold the FG accountable for failing to protect her. Justice must be swift — the culprits must be brought to book”, he advocated.
