NCoS begins campaign against stigmatization of ex-convicts in Katsina

Date:

The Nigerian Correctional Service has started advocacy against stigmatization of ex-convicts across the federation, warning that such negative attitudes increase the risk of reoffending and frustrate rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

DSC Najib Idris Kunduru, the Public Relations officer of Command in Katsina State, said its Command
Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Katsina State Command, Abdulrasheed Sule disclosed this during a community engagement forum held in the State.

Abdulrasheed emphasized that successful reintegration is a critical component of the correctional process and that societal acceptance plays a vital role in reducing recidivism.

He noted that stigmatization often pushes former inmates back into criminal behavior, as rejection and lack of support leave them hopeless and vulnerable.

According to him, giving ex-offenders a second chance is essential for building safer Communities.
‎
‎The forum, which attracted traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and youth groups, underscored the importance of community-based support for ex-offenders.

‎Abdulrasheed further disclosed that the NCoS has strengthened its rehabilitation initiatives, including skills acquisition programmes, educational training, and psychological support, to adequately prepare inmates for life after incarceration.

He stressed, however, that these efforts can only yield the desired results with the active support of the public. The Controller also called on employers to remove barriers to employment for ex-offenders who have served their sentences and demonstrated genuine reform.
‎
Discussions focused on the need for employment opportunities, counseling services, mentorship, and other support systems that can help former inmates reintegrate successfully into society.

Highpoint of the event was collective pledge by community leaders to advocate for the reintegration of ex-offenders and to collaborate closely with the Nigerian Correctional Service in reducing repeat offenses across Katsina State.
