A Nigerian journalist, Vincent Egunyanga has expressed concern over the reported cases of attacks by government-controlled armed thugs hogged glibly on electorate in some voting Centres during Presidential, National, governorship and state houses of Assembly polls.
Some of these attacks and votr suppression that led to deaths of innocent Nigeria voters, while election duty security personnel look on, erodes the sanctity of the ballots expressed by the electorate.
Egunyanga in his Facebook on Saturday, revealed that despite repeated assurances by security agencies to nip the menace in the bud, this monster remains a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
The journalist wrote: “Honestly I have no problem with Bola Tinubu rigging elections. But the people whose votes and mandates is being stolen deserve some respect. You rig people out and still punished them, like Buhari did from 2015 – 2023.
“This is sad. It is equally sad that the National Peace Committee headed by General Abdulsalam Abubakar and Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah refused to condemn the election and post election violence against against Labour party in Lagos and Rivers states. Shame”.
TheNewspad recalls that shortly before the commencement of the 2023 general elections, Presidential Candidates of the various political parties, governors and other Contestants in the election, were made to sign the National Peace Accord.
The exercise which was witnessed by Crème de la crème in the society led by President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu in Abuja, the nation’s Capital.
The Accord, was also met to deepen democratic culture, promote peace among stakeholders in elections and electoral credibility.
