Land grabbing: Two killed, four motorcyclists injured in shootout

A shooting spree by suspected land grabbers have reportedly invaded Orile Eegun Kara Nla village en route Mowe Area in Ogun State, leaving many residents displaced.

The Nigeria Police Command in Ogun State said two persons were gun down by about 40 yet -to-be identified gunmen who caused mayhem in the “sporadic firing on innocent unarmed villagers”.

Four motorcyclists who were caught in the melee, have been hospitalized after the incident that was reported at Mowe Police Division in the State on 9th of June 2023 at about 1450hrs by an anonymous caller.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola who disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, said who were linked to the crime have been arrested at a hideout in Kara Ileke village via Mowe, assuring that the fugitive will be arrested and prosecuted.

She said the two victims were hit by stray bullets before Tactical Team along with other intelligence officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Afeniforo Folake arrived the crime scene, have been identified by police, while their corpses have been evacuated to Idera Hospital for autopsy.

The spokesperson explained that the fleeing suspects snatched four Bajaj Motorcycles at gun point, wounded the motorcycle owners in a bid to use their motorcycles to escape.

SP. Odutola did not reveal the identities of any of the four arrested suspects, except Monsuru Ishola who is being questioned by police operatives in the statement, which partly read, “The fleeing suspects snatched four Bajaj Motorcycles at gun point, wounded the motorcycle owners in a bid to use their motorcycles to escape.

“The motorcycle owners are recuperating in the hospital.
“The tactical unit gave the criminals an unrelentless chase, which made the criminals to abandon their Toyota Corolla, Gold colour Saloon car registered with JJJ 979 HL LAGOS, and presently at the Mowe Police Station.

“Monsuru Ishola has been arrested for questioning, for allegedly playing a role.
“Three suspects in connection with this case have been arrested at a hideout in Kara Ileke village via Mowe.
“Their names and identity will be published in the cause of further updates”, according to Police spokesperson.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP OLANREWAJU YOMI OLADIMEJI, is sending his condolences to the families of the deceased and is saddened by these occurrence.

He has said he remain resolute that the perpetrators will lose sleep and he will hunt them down, while policemen have been prompted to act assiduously to crack the criminals.

The statement said the CP also admonished Ogun State people to go about their lawful daily duties and affairs without fear.
