Gunmen attack UNIBEN student on Campus after GST examinations

Gunmen suspected to be cultists have attacked University of Benin (UNIBEN) Ugbowo Campus of the institution in Edo State.

One student of University injured in the attack that occurred at the the Anatomy entrance school gate on Friday evening, has been hospitalized.

The gunshot victim, according to witnesses, was shot by suspected assailants who laid siege to Anatomy gate at about 4:45p.m after General Studies (GST) Examinations that began on Friday October 27, 2023.

GST are courses offered by everyone irrespective of Course, Department or Faculty in Federal Government of Nigeria.

A car that was recovered at the scene of crime have been recovered by security agents in the University.

But, a staff who confirmed the incident to our Correspondent via a telephone interview, said, “adequate security arrangements have been put on place to prevent breakdown of law and order”.

The staff said, “We were stranded at the Anatomy gate for about 30 minutes after security personnel shut the gate, was riddled with bullets. The unexpected attack is terrible.

“The boy that was shot tried to escape, but the gunmen pursued and shot him. He was been taken to hospital. A car that was abandoned at the scene of crime had been recovered by security agents attached to Department of the University”, the source said.

The staff who craved for anonymity, said the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. (Mrs) Lilian Salami has ordered investigation into the attack, ahead of the continuation of the GST Examinations on Saturday October 28th 2023.

Months ago, UNIBEN final year student of Public Administration identified as Desmond was shot dead in Hall 3 residence in the institution.
