Guard sets suspected vandal ablaze in Lagos

A security guard, Agunbiade Adekunle ‘m’, has allegedly set a suspected vandal ablaze in Shonde Street, Itire,l area of Lagos State.

The victim was a member of a group of hoodlums caught vandalizing vehicle and handover to Adekunle who lives in the street.

Force Public Relations officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed this on Monday in a statement, said, “the guard resorted to killing and setting the vandal ablaze”.

The statement said the case was reported at the Itire Divisional Police Headquarters in Lagos State on the 25th of March 2024 after the tragedy.

ACP Adejobi who condemned jungle justice in the Country, said the guard has been arrested by the police for diligent prosecution.

He said the vandalized owner who is yet-to-be named, raised the alarm, which led to the arrest of one of the vandals, while others escaped.

ACP Adejobi urged the public to shun jungle justice, mob actions, and other forms of extra-judicial killings, including jungle justice, which is a criminal act and grave violation of human rights that threatens the fabric of a civilized society.

According to him, “Jungle justice is a dangerous and regressive practice that has no place in a civilized society.
“The guard has, however, been arrested and will be charged to court for murder.

“Instead of promoting justice, it breeds violence, fear, and injustice. It is imperative that communities reject vigilantism and uphold the rule of law, ensuring that justice is served through fair and transparent legal processes”, ACP Adejobi said.
