A socio-cultural organization under the aegis of Edo National Voice (ENV) has chided Governor Godwin Obaseki over his plan to initiate a Peace process between the Benin monarch, HRM. Oba Ewuare II, and rebellious Benin Dukes (Enigie).
The group accused the Governor of aiding some suspended Benin Dukes (Enigie) to initiate what it described as sacrilegious Court case against the revered Oba Palace and the good people of Benin Kingdom.
A statement endorsed by the President, Edo National Voice, Mr. Iyamu Osaro Culture and others on Thursday May 16, 2024, urged “Edo people to rise above board to continually defend and protect our common heritage, and stop playing the ostrich”.
On Wednesday May 15, 2024, Obaseki pledged to broker peace between the Oba of Benin and other suspended Dukes (Enigie) when he visited Prof. Gregory Akenzua, the suspended Duke of Evbuobanosa Dukedom in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the State.
But the pressure group in statement noted: “it is an abominations for anyone to even think of dabbling into a matter that has been settled by our revered Palace or is Obaseki not aware that he can’t call our revered Oba of Benin Kingdom to negotiate with his subjects?
It added that the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice letter issued on the 5th of March 2024 for the discontinuation of Police charge against one of the suspended Enogie, Prof. Akenzua emphatically confirmed the Edo governor as accomplice.
“The utterances and actions of Obaseki in mediation are confirmation that Obaseki is the architect of the Court case against our revered Palace and the good people of Benin Kingdom.
“It is on record that our revered Palace suspended the defiant Enigie but Obaseki by his utterances and actions still recognizes them as Enigie, which is contrary to the Customary Law of the land.
“If we may ask, can a Commissioner or Minister take a Governor or President to Court because he or she was suspended by their appointor? The Answer is No!, the group said.
