The Nigeria Police Command in Edo State has alerted residents to a new wave of crime involving anonymous callers threatening to detonate bombs allegedly planted in homes, offices, and business premises unless money is paid.
In a public advisory issued on Monday, the Command described the scheme as an emerging form of extortion aimed at instilling fear and exploiting unsuspecting individuals, business owners, and corporate organizations.
According to the statement signed by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command has already received reports of such incidents and has commenced investigations.
“These acts are clear attempts at extortion through fear and intimidation. The Command urges members of the public not to panic or succumb to any financial demands from such callers”, the statement urged.
The advisory assured that the Command has a competent Explosive Ordnance Department capable of detecting and deactivating any explosive devices if discovered.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, has directed the deployment of specialized units — including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, Intelligence Bureau, and Tactical Teams — to promptly respond to all reported threats and ensure public safety.
The Command also urged the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and promptly report any suspicious persons, objects, or movements to the nearest police station or the Command’s Control Room via 08077773721 or 08037646272.
It further disclosed that the police are working closely with telecommunication service providers and other security agencies to trace and apprehend the culprits behind the criminal acts.
“The Edo State Police Command remains fully committed to protecting lives, property, and economic activities within the state. Citizens are assured that every report will be treated with utmost urgency and professionalism”, the statement added.
The Command also appreciated the public for their cooperation and urged continued vigilance with the reminder: “If you see something, say something”.
