Tragedy struck in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 when a 20-year-old man, Pascal Ogbogu, allegedly hacked his 56-year-old father to death with a machete.
The suspect fled the scene following the evening attack.
However, following a distress call, operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division—working alongside family members and the Abatete Vigilante—apprehended the suspect in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Confirming the incident in a press statement on Wednesday afternoon, the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated that security operatives found the lifeless body of the victim in a pool of blood with a deep machete wound to the throat.
The police noted that the swift arrest was heavily facilitated by timely information and collaborative efforts from community members who assisted in tracking the fleeing suspect.
Reacting to the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the synergy between the police, local vigilantes, family, and community members.
He emphasized that active community participation and robust intelligence sharing remain vital to effective policing and the protection of lives and property.
While commiserating with the bereaved family, the Commissioner ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a thorough and comprehensive review to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
He assured the public that the investigation will be handled professionally, ensuring the suspect faces due process.
In the meantime, the remains of the victim have been evacuated and deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
