The Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference is being held under a powerful theme: “Beyond Limits.” The theme challenges the legal profession to rethink its boundaries and imagine new ways of using law to confront Nigeria’s institutional and governance failures.
The real battlefield is on the streets, and figures like VeryDarkMan (VDM) Martins Vincent Otse are already occupying the space the legal profession has long neglected.
No doubt, VeryDarkMan (VDM), a social-media personality who has become one of Nigeria’s most controversial and influential voices on public accountability, is on the AGC panel on national security.
The NBA’s decision to create space for voices outside the traditional legal establishment should therefore be understood as part of what “Beyond Limits” ought to mean.
The official Annual General conference itself brings together lawyers, policymakers, public institutions, academia and wider society for substantive engagement.
For decades, the legal profession has been the principal institutional vehicle through which Nigerians challenge government illegality. And some lawyers still believe that only lawyers hold the solution to the national impasse.
VDM has a role cut out for him, one that complements, rather than competes with, the work of the Bar. Lawyering plugs certain holes. Street accountability plugs others. Nigeria needs both. VDM did not emerge from the courtroom, the chambers or the traditional civil-society establishment.
He came from the digital space and built a massive audience by confronting issues of alleged misconduct, corruption, consumer abuse, public-sector failures and social injustice in language that ordinary Nigerians understand.
He has built the Ratel Movement, an online-driven civic initiative which he presents as a grassroots accountability platform. His activities have included public campaigns, community interventions and protests on issues ranging from insecurity to public services. And that is precisely why his appearance in the orbit of the NBA’s Annual General Conference is significant.
VeryDarkMan has emerged as a critical bridge across this gap. Unconstrained by the formal limitations of courtroom practice, he has consistently spoken on good governance, insecurity, accountability, lifestyle excesses of public officials, and the practical enforcement of court decisions.
His voice reaches the ordinary Nigerian in real time, translating complex failures into language that mobilises public scrutiny where legal processes often stall.
The conversation has also highlighted the need for more pluralistic engagements. Closed-door meetings dominated by lawyers alone risk becoming echo chambers.
Meaningful progress on enforcement of judgments, security, and accountability demands tables that include activists, journalists, community voices, and digital accountability figures who operate outside the formal legal system.
The challenge now confronting the legal profession is clear: What exactly are lawyers prepared to do beyond the courtroom and, perhaps most importantly, it must go beyond the idea that winning a case is the same thing as delivering justice.
The new ecosystem design is – the lawyer provides the law, the activist provides pressure, the journalist provides investigation, the citizen provides legitimacy and the court provides authoritative resolution.
Nigeria therefore needs a new model of public-interest lawyering, one that is prepared to leave the comfort of chambers, engage citizens directly, use technology intelligently, collaborate with civil society and communicate legal victories in language the public understands.
That ecosystem is far more powerful than any one part. VeryDarkMan may not be everyone’s preferred messenger.
He may not even be the messenger lawyers would have chosen, but he has a message that lawyers require for the boundless limit
Beyond Limits means being willing to listen even when the messenger makes the profession uncomfortable.
The real question before the Nigerian Bar is no longer whether VDM has a place in the accountability conversation.
The question is whether lawyers will remain spectators in that conversation or step beyond the courtroom and make the law a living thing capable of being described.
